History
According to some historians’ statements, water from Balneario de Carballo was already known and used by Romans. In 1716 some neighbours from the area noticed some weird phenomenon. They began digging and found a stone basin of the ancient spring. Soon after, works were carried out to take advantage of their medical use.
According to a description in 1764 medicinal water was used in a kind of wells where bathers went into. There were some small buildings for the agüistas, another one for the military and a shelter for the poor. In 1817 they went into Facultative Management. After it was neglected for a while, springs were acquired by Torre Penela Count, who brought a simple spa into operation from 1851 to the end of the century.
In 1928 spa water was declared to be for public use. In 1930 the excellent bathing house was said to be really crowded and to have an inn and a chapel by Eugenio Carré Aldao in Geografía General del Reino de Galicia, Provincia de A Coruña.
Nowadays, the complex has two-star hotels and a spa area with advanced technology, which is under control of a medical director and his assistants’ team. In 2007 its spa facilities got the quality Q, and some months later the distinction was for its hotel. Since then, and taking into account the quality policy of the centre, we are continuously working in order to improve our services.
